Topic: xxx-06 for deer and elk: 165 or 180 grain bullets?  (Read 48590 times)

So I chase elk nearly 1 calendar week later deer season ends and I dont really have time to sight in my rifle between the 2 seasons. As a consequence, I need to utilise the same bullet for both deer and elk.

So....which exercise you reccomend? 165 or 180 grain for both deer and elk?? Thank you!

Either is fine.  I use 180s out of my .xxx-06 but because they seem to shoot better.  Simply I'k not hand loading and just using factory ammo.  I shot several brands and bullet weights to figure out which 1 shot best.

I would've been happy to use 165s merely my burglarize didn't seem to shoot them as accurately.

Of course, now I shoot a bow or a .300WSM but I all the same have the .30-06.

shoot whatever is most accurate! could be 150 to 220 anyon would accept down an elk my dad hunted elk for yrs with 150 grn out of his 30-06 my gun shoots 180s best.

If you lot're going to use a depression toll blazon of bullet (core lokt, power point, etc) become with the heavier 180 grain. If y'all're going with a more "premium" bullet such equally a Nosler Partition or a Barnes, so employ 165.

15 grains wont brand a bit of difference to an elk or a deer they volition exist simply as dead with either 1.  If you put information technology in the right spot.

180gr is all I've ever shot out of '06, always worked well.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you lot.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
You are never to onetime to learn something stupid.

If yous are going to handload...I'd get with a 165, its a scrap flatter shooting.  I've been shooting 165s our of my -06 for over 20 years now...and have to work up a new load equally the bullets are WAY out of product and I'thou out of the 2000 I had.

If you dont handload, observe a factory load that shoots from your rifle..then buy a bunch of it and PRACTICE.  Hitting with either weight puts more critters down than missing.

A Smith & Wesson Beats Four Aces.

Whatta ya hateful I tin't accept 1 of each?

What nosotros have here is...Washington Department of NO Fish and WATCHABLE Wildlife.

WDFW is going further and farther backwards....nosotros need FISH AND GAME back!

If yous're going to use a low cost type of bullet (core lokt, power point, etc) go with the heavier 180 grain. If yous're going with a more than "premium" bullet such as a Nosler Segmentation or a Barnes, then use 165.

Yep, economy 165 hunting bullets just won't kill an elk.;)

Seriously, different bullet weights take different compromises between downrange energy and velocity (trajectory).  I've always considered the 165 grain spitzer an optimal bullet for the .30-06 giving excellent compromise in range, relatively flat trajectory and bear on energy.  With proper bullet placement any 165 grain spitzer designed for hunting traveling at the velocity the bullet is designed for will kill all big game in n America.

don't sweat the modest stuff!

In the 06 trajectory difference between 165 and 180 is virtually zero. The 180 is better at long ranges. I'd apply the 180 if my rifle shot them well.

When the chips are down..... the buffalo is empty!!

I do not store at Amazon

i employ the 165gr nosler partitions and they have performed great.

Sight in with the load that shoots best in your rifle. The merely elk I have harvested was with my 30-06 using 150gr Hornaday interlock manus loads. That niggling fasten balderdash tipped in most 10 yards later a heart shot. bullet preformed perfect, found information technology stuck in the hide on the reverse side, held together and mushroomed nicely!

I felt similar a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

If you're going to use a depression price type of bullet (core lokt, power indicate, etc) go with the heavier 180 grain. If you're going with a more than "premium" bullet such equally a Nosler Segmentation or a Barnes, then employ 165.
Yeah, economic system 165 hunting bullets just won't kill an elk.;)
Seriously, dissimilar bullet weights have unlike compromises between downrange energy and velocity (trajectory).  I've e'er considered the 165 grain spitzer an optimal bullet for the .thirty-06 giving excellent compromise in range, relatively flat trajectory and touch energy.  With proper bullet placement any 165 grain spitzer designed for hunting traveling at the velocity the bullet is designed for will kill all big game in northward America.

That's just kind of a general rule of thumb I'd go by, didn't mean to say it's the only right respond. I similar using premium bullets for elk, and the reason I would become lighter than 180 is but for the reduced recoil. I would actually become with a 150 grain Barnes if it would shoot in my burglarize. But i do believe if you're using "soft" bullets like the Core-Lokts, you might besides go with the 180. There's no downside to it, the 180 will shoot merely as far as any other weight.

being a proficient shot outweighs that decision 10 to 1.  Get whatever is cheaper so you tin shoot more before the season starts.

"Correct now, I am thinking that If my grandmother was here, she would be lecturing me about how there are poor people in Africa, that would just love to have a Ruger, I would simply say "Swell, granny, lets just ship all the Rugers to Africa!"

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.

My gun similar the 180's ameliorate than the 165's.  When given the choice I near ever lean towards a heavier slug.  That manner if your shot if off a little more than planned you take a little more bullet mass to crusade more harm to recover the brute.
